Support for small Web applications (Widgets) was implemented. Site-specific preferences, including a content blocking feature and a management interface, were introduced. The popup blocker was enhanced. Bittorrent support was added. An error console, an editor for search shortcuts, and an internal source viewer/editor were added. Web page thumbnails were enabled. Support for Acid 2 and several CSS 3 properties was improved. Plugins using the Netscape plugin API 0.16 are now supported, and the need for Motif was removed. New IMAP mailer code was implemented. A system tray icon was added for Unix.

Websites Gain in Biggest Month Ever

The Internet experienced its strongest site growth ever last month, powered by a surge in blogs and free web sites. In the June 2006 survey we received responses from 85,541,228 sites, a gain of 3.96 million sites from the May report. This is the largest one-month increase in sites in the history of the Netcraft survey, surpassing a gain of 3.3 million in March 2003, although the 2003 gain was larger in percentage terms (8.5%, compared to 4.7% this month).

HP Brings Carrier Grade Linux to Debian

In a move calculated to expand Carrier Grade Linux's (CGL's) developer and user communities, HP has registered Debian's "Sarge" distribution with version 2.02 of the OSDL's CGL specification, and started a Carrier Grade subproject within Debian. Debian-CGL offers an intermediary choice between commercial CGL distributions and "rolling your own," according to the OSDL.HP has long used Debian as the basis for custom Linux OSes delivered to its telecom customers. Alan Meyer, R&D manager for Linux/OSS at HP, explains, "Red Hat and SUSE are our premier partners. If a customer can meet their needs with [these] off-the-shelf distros, great. If not, we start with Sarge, and based on customer RFQs, create a modified version of Linux that we deliver electronically to them."

FreeNAS, an open source NAS server, can convert a PC into a network-attached storage server. The software, which is based on FreeBSD, Samba, and PHP, includes an operating system that supports various software RAID models and a Web user interface. The server supports access from Windows machines, Apple Macs, FTP, SSH, and Network File System (NFS), and it takes up less than 16MB of disk space on a hard drive or removable media.

Diagraming and Outlining Tools

There are any number of opensource (that means free, as in beer) outlining and diagraming tools that may be of interest/use to law faculty. Here are my favorites.

Freemind is a mind mapping tool written in Java. It runs on any platform. It is useful for diagraming and annotating ideas.
JOE, Java Outline Editor, is a basic outliner. A little old, but still quite effective for outlining anything.
OPML Editor is a more sophisticated outlining and editing tool. It is available for Windows and Mac and has a number of cool features including the ability to post directly to a website.
Dia is a full-fledged diagraming program that can be used to create very sophisticated flow charts and diagrams. It is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

MSFT Betas Abound

The software giant on May 23 delivered Beta 2 versions of its Windows Vista operating system, Office System 2007 and Windows Server Longhorn at the same time. The scheduled 2007 arrival of the three products, now in beta, means that 2007 is shaping up to be one of the most important periods in some years for Microsoft, and by extension, the PC industry. But by delivering all three betas simultaneously, Microsoft is also setting out to prove that the trio is also more tightly coupled than before when it comes to security and productivity features, including search and document sharing.

MSFT Unveils Requirements for Vista

As expected, the software giant on May 18 unveiled its Windows Vista Get Ready Web site, along with a set of minimum PC hardware guidelines for Vista Capable PCs—which call for at least an 800MHz processor, 512MB of RAM and a DirectX 9-capable graphics processor, but ask for more for those who seek to use all of Vista's features—and an Windows Upgrade Advisor application as part of a campaign to prepare people.

Dell Puts AMD in Servers

The Austin, Texas, PC maker has long been an Intel shop. But it intends to change that later in 2006, when it will begin offering a multi-processor AMD Opteron server.Dell, which announced its first-quarter earnings May 18, said in a statement that it would begin offering "AMD Opteron processors in our multi-processor servers by the end of the year offering a great new technology to our customers at the high-end of our server line."
