Ascertaining The Identity Of The Sender Of An Email

I have never needed to do this before, so have no idea how to go about
it nor whether it is in fact possible. On another List that hI ave
been on for many years a vile, anonymous troll has been causing no end
of trouble in recent times. The troll posts under the pseudonym,
"Leslie Germaine", and from a GoogleMail email address which shows as "lgermaine43@gmail.com
". The following is the full header of an email sent direct to me
(i.e. Off-List) today. Any / all help in pinning down the true
identity and place of posting of the troll will be very greatly
appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

RE: Ascertaining The Identity Of The Sender Of An Email

Ron,
I've always looked for the X originating IP address, but this message only has a return path and email address listed. Further down in the headers I see two additional IP addresses, one showing a hop on Google's servers (74.125.46.153) and then another hop (10.231.12.138). This last IP address checks out to be an ISP, Cogent Communications, (http://cogentco.com) so it is possible that the person sending the
message was connected via Cogent. Tracing that IP also seems to show that it is a block reserved for Philadelphia customers.

Ascertaining The Identity Of The Sender Of An Email

Short of a court order you wont get this guy from this email.

He/she sent this paticular email via a web interface.  Theoretically google might have the IP address used to access the gmail account, they might even have a record tied to the message ID, but they will want a court order before handing that over.  Even then, the IP number might be from a proxy.

I'll try some other tricks, but I think a simple trace wont work.  I would contact google's spam people and file an abuse complaint.

Subject: [teknoids] Ascertaining The Identity Of The Sender Of An Email

I have never needed to do this before, so have no idea how to go about it nor whether it is in fact possible. On another List that hI ave been on for many years a vile, anonymous troll has been causing no end of trouble in recent times. The troll posts under the pseudonym, "Leslie Germaine", and from a GoogleMail email address which shows as "lgermaine43@gmail.com". The following is the full header of an email sent direct to me (i.e. Off-List) today. Any / all help in pinning down the true identity and place of posting of the troll will be very greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Ascertaining The Identity Of The Sender Of An Email

More than likely it is the SpamAssassin (or similar) filtering software returning the 'score' the e-mail was given when delivered. Some mail clients pick up on it (Apple Mail, being one), some you have to specify. Regardless, it's a handy and hidden way of giving the user some information as to why the message was delivered.

Ascertaining The Identity Of The Sender Of An Email

I think that the "Spam Score" is something that my spam filtering
program, "Spam Sieve 2.7.3" (for Mac), automatically assigns to all my
incoming email.

Ascertaining The Identity Of The Sender Of An Email

I think that the "Spam Score" is something that my spam filtering
program, "Spam Sieve 2.7.3" (for Mac), automatically assigns to all my
incoming email.

RE: Ascertaining The Identity Of The Sender Of An Email

Forgive my ignorance of SMTP, but isn't it possible to spoof the "from" address? I routinely get spam from myself, even though I'm certain my anti-virus software is up-to-date and my computer shouldn't be the originator of the spam.

How do we know that this person is sending from Gmail? (Assuming Ron's harasser is sophisticated enough to hide his/her address and IP...)

Of course, isn't this what Block Lists (blacklists) are for: to ignore bothersome senders? Why bother tracing the email when you can simply ignore?

RE: Ascertaining The Identity Of The Sender Of An Email

Well it could be a good fake, but from looking at the header it appears to have come from within google's private network and seems no different than any other gmail.  One could test to see if the gmail address actually exists (most faked email address dont).  The entire header could be faked, and the email inserted somewhere else, but that requires some doing.  Of course if you work from the assumption that everything in the head can be faked, then there isnt any point in trying.
