Classroom computer software

Getting ready to put some new PCs in classrooms.

What software do you like to have installed, aside from anti-malware and
the OS standard stuff?

We have:

MS and Correl Office
Itunes
Turningpoint clicker software
Quicktime, VLC AND PowerDVD
Adobe reader
Firefox
Document camera software

I know that a lot of standard classroom setups include Real Player, but
I stopped liking them many years ago for a variety of reasons.

If it existed, I would also install a Keynote player. There is an
online Keynote player, but it requires an Apple ID to work.

Any other suggestions?

RE: Classroom computer software

One more suggestion: Audacity or some other easy-to-use classroom audio recorder. I use Audacity to make my own class podcasts that I post on Classcaster (*hat tip to CALI folks*). You'll need some kind of microphone as well, of course. {Jonathan}

I use Faronics DeepFreeze to keep the PCs in a standard configuration and to reduce troubleshooting needs.

RE: Classroom computer software

A strong second for DeepFreeze, although you have to take into account that unless you plan otherwise, local user profiles are wiped at each reboot. Wasn't really an issue with XP, but "new" user logins tend to be pokey on Windows 7.

We use Deep Freeze as well to help maintain our baseline configurations. We also include VLC player. VLC works wells plays a variety of multimedia files.

RE: Classroom computer software

For those of you using Deep Freeze on classroom machines, do you force reboots after every user session or do you rely on the users to restart the computers instead of logging off?

Thanks,

RE: Classroom computer software

We do not have Deep Freeze force reboots after every session, nor do we have users reboot after they use them. (In fact, group policy is set such that standard users *can't* restart or shut down the systems.) We have Deep Freeze reboot the systems into a maintenance window every night and then it shuts the systems down when the window is over. We then have a scheduled task run in the morning to wake all the systems up prior to classes starting.

RE: Classroom computer software

I use a generic logon account for my classrooms (each room has its own, and they are on AD). I have a couple of policies in place to prevent Windows Updates, reboot prompts, and such, preferring to do the updates myself periodically. I also have DeepFreeze set to shut the machine down after 120 minutes of inactivity. I've not heard any complaint about the time frame. I'll soon be looking into automating the update process using maintenance modes, and scripts/batches.

Classroom computer software

Bill, I force a Reboot after maintenance runs something 5am every day. I agree with Thayer about the user logins being slow. However, I have not had security issue in the labs in many moons. We try to remind users to logoff and most are pretty good about it.

Thanks,

For those of you using Deep Freeze on classroom machines, do you force reboots after every user session or do you rely on the users to restart the computers instead of logging off?

Thanks,
Bill

A strong second for DeepFreeze, although you have to take into account that unless you plan otherwise, local user profiles are wiped at each reboot. Wasn't really an issue with XP, but "new" user logins tend to be pokey on Windows 7.

RE: Classroom computer software

Privacy is a hot issue here at UNC, so I have my public computers in the library set to reboot after each user. I don't know about the public computers in the law school.

However, this does not apply for the computers using autologon.

All of the library Deepfreeze computers also reboot in the morning before the library opens.

Bill, I force a Reboot after maintenance runs something 5am every day. I agree with Thayer about the user logins being slow. However, I have not had security issue in the labs in many moons. We try to remind users to logoff and most are pretty good about it.

RE: Classroom computer software

We have a university wide policy prohibiting generic accounts. Faculty must login themselves to use the computers. We are actually in the middle of our second day of our semester classroom technology training sessions for faculty.

As far as software on the podiums, we are using the following using a XP image;

Microsoft Office
WordPerfect X3 (yes, we still have a few WordPerfect users)
Echo360 client software (for our automated podcast system)
ITunes
Turning Point Clicker Software
Elmo Document Camera Software
Firefox
VLC Player

We will be adding LiveStream's Procaster software into the mix this semester for video recording/streaming classes upon request.

We request our faculty to logout when done (we actually disable shut off and give them a logout button). We are using the Echo360 podcast software and the terminal process runs in the background so that users who don't use the computer can still have their classes podcasted.

I don't use Deep Freeze on the classrooms, and I have not had a problem
with our classroom computers for 2 years. Prior to that time, some
remote classrooms had some problems, but I solved that with OpenDNS.

Classroom computer software

We install Skype as we have a small portable HD camera and a Samson Go
Mic (highly recommended - picks up even the back rows of our
classrooms!) to facilitate bringing in special guests to our
classrooms. Silverlight is also a must for us as we use Mediasite by
Sonic Foundry.

RE: Classroom computer software

One suggestion: be sure that all standard plugins for video and other content (e.g. Flash) are installed, especially if faculty logins will not include administrative rights. Trying to show a quick clip of relevance to the classroom, and being asked (and being unable) to install the required plugin, makes for less-than-smooth teaching. {Jonathan}

Getting ready to put some new PCs in classrooms.

What software do you like to have installed, aside from anti-malware and
the OS standard stuff?

We have:

MS and Correl Office
Itunes
Turningpoint clicker software
Quicktime, VLC AND PowerDVD
Adobe reader
Firefox
Document camera software

I know that a lot of standard classroom setups include Real Player, but
I stopped liking them many years ago for a variety of reasons.

If it existed, I would also install a Keynote player. There is an
online Keynote player, but it requires an Apple ID to work.

Any other suggestions?

Classroom computer software

I second Jonathan's comments! We recently had a situation in which Flash
was not installed for Firefox but was installed for IE. Here's a quick
annotated screen grab that shows how to check for Flash support for
Firefox: http://bchapman.clarify-it.com/d/4apgnh . Chrome installs its own
Flash support.

I would also suggest that you should still install Java, but I'm sure I
will be shouted down on that one. Also, the screensaver should be extended
to 120 minutes or some sufficiently long time that it won't bother faculty
members.

BTW, is everyone installing IE, Chrome, and Firefox these days? We're
still just doing IE and Firefox, but will probably soon add Chrome.
