Creating document sets for legal simulation problems
One of our faculty members is working on creating a simulation and wants
to know:
Is there any way of which any of you are aware that I could create a
bunch of fake e-mails to and from the characters involved in the law
suit? If we could figure out a way to do that, it would make the
mechanics a lot more realistic.
I know of tools to generate fake identities, but whole email
threads/document sets are another matter. Do you know of any
apps/websites/services which can generate (or provide) fake
documentation for simulations? Thanks!

Creating document sets for legal simulation problems
Debbie,
I would just take a low tech sort of approach and create a
template/macro for your favorite word processor then use it to create
the emails as simple documents. The basic structure of an email is
very simple, a To: and From: that ids the parties, a Date:, and the
Body:.
The real hard part is creating the content of the messages.

Creating document sets for legal simulation problems
If you really had to go all out (like you want to use Camtasia to record simulation videos) then someone could create a physical or virtual dns server and mail server to host your fake mail domains and user accounts then connect the mail client machines to it and record away. Seems like a lot of work to just forge a static email document but necessary for video capture/simulations.
You could advance the time on the server and client machines to simulate threads/events spanning hours, days, and timezones.

Creating document sets for legal simulation problems
Use a real email exchange and edit the personal information substituting
fake names, locations, date and times for the real thing. That would be my
solution.

A quickie method for the above using Gmail and Google Docs:
1. Create your fake conversation mailing messages to yourself, iterate
by the number of separate threads you need.
2. For each thread, Forward All after changing the subject line so
they don't concatenate in the original thread (command found on the
"More" drop-down list box).
3. In each new thread, use the "Create a Document" command also found
on the "More" list box's drop-down. This creates a document containing
the complete thread (including email headers) in a Google Docs
document.
4. Save the GDocs document to disc in a format your word processor can handle.
5. Edit at will, changing names and headers, etc.
Best regards,
Paul

RE: Creating document sets for legal simulation problems
I've received a lot of great suggestions. Does anyone know of a way to generate the content itself (the messages, not headers and things like that), or if there are packages of this kind of content already available?
