Extensis Portfolio? Digital Asset Management Server?

Hi,

Does anyone have any experience using Extensis Portfolio 9 or any digital asset management system for that matter? Portfolio 9 seems like a great solution for digital asset management, but we're worried about how it's implemented due to the fact that our building is on two subnets. There's also a security flaw I pointed out to the Extensis people that hasn't been resolved yet.

Ideally, we'd have a digital asset management server that stores the assets in a filesystem (like Extensis Portfolio) but uses a database to manage the input/output (unlike Extensis Portfolio, which uses shared network drives thus removing the fine-grained permissions capabilities and potentially causing an IT maintenance nightmare in our mulit-subnet, multi-windows domain building).

Right now, I'm using Google Picasa to index one of our image libraries and it says 55,178 images and counting. Since our digital assets are not managed, we have upwards of 10 duplicates of the same image in different folders. We still have video, audio, and Adobe Creative Suite files Google's Picasa cannot index.

Any suggestions out there that could point us in the right direction?

Thank you,
