Digital signage- Magicinfo
Samsung is selling 46 inch monitors for signage, with an XP computer
built in, with a program called MagicInfo, for digital signage. $2200.
Is anyone using MagicInfo? From what I have seen of it I am pretty
impressed. Someone across campus here just got one and showed it to me,
but does not have it up and running yet.
Does anyone have experience with it?

RE: Digital signage- Magicinfo
We started out with MagicInfo on our Samsung displays but after a couple
of years, we upgraded to Magic Net Pro when it became available. I
didn't find either product easy to use or very flexible and it lacked
some key features I was interested in, like content management. We just
switched to a hosted solution from Risevision. It's far more intuitive
and flexible although I'm not sure it'll solve the content management
need. It's a subscription-based service so we prepaid for 6 months and
will reevaluate at that point.
Our University is looking for an Enterprise solution to digital signage.
Some of us have moved forward out of necessity and the result is a lack
of commodity purchasing or any real plan for sharing event promotion.
I'm on the committee and, in fact, am the chair of the subgroup
responsible for doing an external scan. I was hoping to use this group
to gather info on what people are using and how it's working. Of course
I'll be happy to share the results. I had hoped to work on it this week
as our internal survey is live.
Glen, feel free to contact me directly if you'd like more info.

RE: Digital signage- Magicinfo
We have been running UCView (www.ucview.com) as our digital signage
package for about three years. It's hosted by them and works ok. They
have a lot of good features -- many that we spec'd for them.
When we first started our digital signage project we found them to be
probably the most cost-effective hosted solution. Very inexpensive. We
essentially used their product to teach ourselves what we needed from a
digital signage product.
We are currently evaluating other packages to find a product that better
serves the needs of the entire university community.
We looked briefly at the Samsung products but felt that their solution
was too restrictive and too proprietary... though the hardware side is
tempting.
Cheers,
Phil

Digital signage- Magicinfo
For those of you using a website (whether one you develop or a service
provider/etc), I would like to share our design model. (This is for our
individual room 20² displays)
We¹ve deployed 5 Optiplex gx150s in ³strategic² locations around our
buildings (read this as we decided to primarily use dvi and the extenders
only go 150¹).
Stuffing them full of generic nvidia cards and using linux has allowed us to
drive 22 displays (one box has 3 single and 2 dual head cards in it).
We use a very simplistic approach (just X, metacity and opera in kiosk mode)
and it has worked very well for us.
We use xset (via cron) to turn the displays off (dpms change) at night and
wake them in the morning.
While X is tied to all interfaces, we start one instance of opera for each
interface/card and point that back to a unique url. We handle flash
(rotating image) just fine. Right now, the load on our 7 display system is
0.98, 0.86, 0.61. I will admit that we do have 512MB ram in this system.
We are quite happy with our solution and the price tag (our cost, sans power
in all cases and network in a large number of them) was 400 per display. Of
course, we could now do 24² displays at the same cost :)
Tom
P.s. Quite a few people just saw our setup at the ABA conference. I hope
that more get to see it this coming June at the 20th annual CALI
Conference!!!

RE: Digital signage- Magicinfo
Tom, in your $400 per display cost are you counting software development
time as well? Surely there's a cost for Tim's time or is he another one
of your talented volunteers?

Sorry, no.. Design time is not included.. I meant to exude that in the
beginning when I said ³For those of you using a website (whether one you

So.. Whether you design in house (or buy something), this is just a model of
getting a web screen everywhere..

RE: Digital signage- Magicinfo
We have three in our building. They work fairly well. The functionality of the Magicinfo/MaginNet is great, but can be cumbersome to operate. We use them to display a webpage for digital signage. It is nice to be able to schedule power on/off as well. The best part of this is the simplicity of installation. Just power and data to the location and you have digital signage.
I'll reiterate to make sure I am clear. Functionally, the product is great. However, the software isn't the easiest to use and could use some work.
Hope this helps.

Digital signage- Magicinfo
Although it has no law school, NC state has developed a pretty impressive digital signage solution in-house, using MacMinis attached behind screens spread across campus. They call it Billboard, and it's basically open source (if you ask). I know the folks who developed it and can put anyone in touch with those people if there's interest. Dennis--just curious since I know you're a big Mac guy, are you using MacMinis for signage at Oregon?

RE: Digital signage- Magicinfo
We are using the Samsung displays.
The server software (MagicInfo) needs some refinement, but it basically works. It is not the best, but it does what we need it to do (after you figure out a few tricks). Samsung support has been very good in helping resolve issues with the displays.
I'd be happy to directly answer any additional questions you may have....

Digital signage- Magicinfo
We've been using MagicNet (the version prior to MagicInfo) for about 2 years here. We control/manage four 46" Samsung 460dxn screens. MagicNet is a quirky beast, to be sure, but once we tamed it and customized it to our needs, it's been great. We have had quality control issues with the screen hardware itself. A few fans have died and two screens we had to send back entirely. A third party service center has been quick to supply parts and come do repairs, however. Happy to consult off-list about it.
