The University of New Mexico Law Library is seeking an experienced
librarian for the position of Assistant Director for Public Services.
This is a full-time, 12-month appointment to the Law Library faculty at
the rank of either Associate Professor (tenure-track) or Full Professor
(tenured).
The UNM School of Law enrolls approximately 115 students in its
first-year class, with approximately 350 J.D. students in total. The
School's clinical program, a requirement for graduation, is recognized
nationally as one of the best, offering students a broad range of
practical opportunities. Students can earn certificates in Indian Law
and Natural Resources Law. The law faculty consists of 34 full-time
members; 50 percent are women, and 35 percent are minorities.
The University of New Mexico Law Library houses the largest academic
legal research collection in the State of New Mexico, with more than
417,000 volumes in print and microform format, placing it in the "large"
library category under ABA accreditation standards. The Library
encompasses two floors with beautiful views of the Sandia Mountains. The
Library is open an average of 90 hours per week and its gate count
reaches 10,000+ visits per month. In a typical year, the Law librarians
answer nearly 4,000 questions at the Reference Desk, with 20% of the
questions coming from practitioners and alumni, and another 45% from
public citizens who come to the Library to do legal research.
In their role as educators, the Law Library faculty provided a total of
136 training sessions for a total of 1,367 attendees during FY2007-08.
The Law librarians teach Legal Research I (required) and electives in
Legal Research II as well as Specialized Legal Research on topics such
as Indian Law, Natural Resources Law, and International Law.
The librarians support a popular and busy Faculty Research Service that
offers document delivery and research services for the Law School
faculty. The Law librarians completed 221 requests for faculty research
assistance and delivered 877 books and articles to Law faculty during
FY2007-08.
The Law Library offers many services for citizens who come to the
building to use its collection and databases. It also has a community
outreach program to increase citizen access to legal information. Since
the program was initiated in 2005, librarians have traveled throughout
the state to provide 43 training sessions for non-law librarians and
community groups.
Position Responsibilities:
The Assistant Director for Public Services will work under the general
supervision of the Library Director and in collaboration with the
Library's collection, technical services, and information technology
managers to guide overall library operations. In addition, the Assistant
Director for Public Services will directly manage the Library's faculty
research and scholarship support services; reference services; access
services, including circulation and interlibrary loan; and instruction
and outreach programs for court employees, public librarians and members
of the general public. This includes developing and providing innovative
services to library patrons, and participating in the delivery of such
services, including teaching legal research classes. The Assistant
Director for Public Services will supervise four Public Services library
faculty members and three library staff assigned to Public Services
roles. This includes setting service standards, implementing policies,
and providing meaningful training and assessment for student employees,
staff, and tenured and tenure-track faculty engaged in librarianship,
teaching, scholarship, and service activities.
Minimum Requirements:
ALA-accredited M.L.S. and ABA-accredited J.D. At least three years of
experience in an academic law library.
Preferred Requirements:
Proficiency in Reference, Research, and Client Services; Teaching; and
Library Management. Evidence of a strong service orientation. A record
of progressively responsible supervisory experience. Work history should
include providing legal reference services; supporting faculty research;
teaching legal research to law students; and using emerging library and
instructional technology. Excellent written and oral communication
skills. Demonstrated ability to form a strong rapport with colleagues,
law faculty, and law students. A record of participation in library
and/or technology-related national professional associations.
Demonstrated excellence in librarianship, teaching, service and
scholarship, in order to qualify for a tenured appointment; or the
potential to demonstrate excellence in these areas within three years in
order to qualify for a tenure-track appointment.
