RE: Have you outsourced faculty email to MS-Live or Gmail?

William Mitchell went students, staff and faculty to MS live@ EDU. For the most part we have been VERY happy. We just experienced our first issue and worked well with MS to get it resolved. We came from a local implementation of Exchange and Outlooks so MS was the simplest transition for all. We did the committee selection process and almost everyone felt MS was a better tool for WM over Google.
Personally I have enjoyed the use of the web Word and the "Sky Drive" storage. They work great.

RE: Have you outsourced faculty email to MS-Live or Gmail?

Wow...I'm very surprised that so many of you have implemented a cloud
solution.

UNM has an Enterprise email project that's been going on for a couple of
years now. First group's charge..."does it make sense to consolidate the
40+ UNM messaging systems into one?". Answer: yup (duh...only took a
year and a million meetings/focus groups to figure that one out).

Second group's charge is to determine the best solution. While there's
talk of putting student accounts in the cloud, there are those
(especially the hospital) who have grave concerns about faculty/staff
accounts. My guess is that UNM will adopt a solution that includes
both...students in the cloud, faculty/staff on Exchange.

Since I'll probably be retired before group 2 gets consensus, we decided
to keep our email in-house on Exchange. I did look into a hosted
Exchange solution for our alumni, but just haven't moved forward with
that decision yet.

RE: Have you outsourced faculty email to MS-Live or Gmail?

Cyndi, I strongly suggest you move the alumni to the cloud. Our experience is it's easy, free and very poorly used. We create MS Live accounts for all graduates in April. We then give our graduates a year to get off our student account and migrate to the alumni account. That way they have a Mitchell account for job hunting and life if wanted.

Good luck with your discussions

Here at the University of Georgia, we have outsourced to MS-Live and it has not been a happy experience. We've had lots of downtime and many complaints.

We at Atlanta's John Marshall Law School went to Google Apps for Education
last year. Has worked well for us, plenty of mail storage, almost no down
time, and free for education. I think there are ALOT of features and
products available from Google through Apps, that are totally underutilized
by Faculty, Staff and Students, especially the ones that insist on using
Outlook and not actually looking at the google interface and the other
products.

Please feel free to contact me directly with more questions. Be glad to
help.

Have you outsourced faculty email to MS-Live or Gmail?

We're getting ready to in the Fall ... faculty, staff, students,
administration, everyone... would be interested in comments, suggestions,
experiences from others as well.

Thanks.
