Interesting community and project: diybookscanner.org
Folks,
Combine carpentry and technology and what do you get?
http://diybookscanner.org/ is the home of a community devoted to the
creation of book scanners built around digital cameras. Daniel Reetz is the
founder and chief instigator and is doing some really fascinating things.
I'm in the process of building a book scanner based on the "New Standard
Book Scanner" detailed here in their forums:
http://diybookscanner.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=333
Anyway, Joan's request for recommendations on cameras reminded me to mention
this project. They've got strong opinions on cameras and seem to prefer the
Canons for their hackability.
Best regards,
Ben

Ben,
Please report back on how your project goes. I saw an article on DIY Book scanners on the Instructibles website: http://bit.ly/cw9jG6 and have it on my summer to do list.
Good luck!
Rich

Interesting community and project: diybookscanner.org
Rich,
Will do - Reetz is the author of the Instructables article - he expanded the
ideas from that article into the diybookscanner.org site. The new scanner
design is based on a project Reetz did with the On Demand Book Service,
which is a Canadian first nations-oriented group:
http://meeting.knet.ca/mp19/course/view.php?id=20
Of course, I am as much interested in the software toolchain as the
hardware/carpentry aspects of this. There's a really interesting program
called ScanTailor that they use for post-processing scanned images. It's
available over here: http://scantailor.sourceforge.net/ . People are working
on a Linux-based toolchain for processing the images from the cameras but
the default toolchain is Windows-based at present.
Best,
Ben
