Head of Collection and Library Systems-Law Library

The Northeastern University School of Law Library is looking for a Head of Collection and Library Systems who is a dynamic administrator and planner who will serve as a change agent with proven ability to understand systems, the consequences of change and the ability to lead staff through changes. S/he will lead collections and systems as the library makes significant changes in the balance of print and electronic resources over the next two years and will advise and envision changes as the needs of the Library evolve and as the Law Library is undergoing significant change and possible restructuring.

The Head of Collection and Library Systems administers all aspects of the library's Collection and Library Systems Department and supervises departmental staff in a team based atmosphere. S/he will also be a member of the Law Library Administrative Team.

The areas of responsibility include metadata, systems and technologies, collection development and maintenance, acquisition and collection expenditures, processing of materials and preservation activities and the Head of Collection and Library Systems will perform some of those duties depending on the needs of the department and skills of its staff.

S/he will plan priorities for the department, monitors work flow, works with vendors, and is responsible for the quality of the metadata creation for the library and collaborates with University Libraries staff on developing appropriate standards. S/he is responsible for all aspects of the collection development process in all formats including acquisition of materials, budgetary tracking, collection policy review and retention changes as needed to fulfill the strategic directions of the law library.

S/he will investigate and implement as needed library systems and emerging technologies including but not limited to discovery tools. S/he should be well versed in Integrated Library Systems, especially III/Millennium as a jointly managed system with the University Libraries, and how they can be utilized to their full potential.

As a professional librarian, the Head of Collection and Library Systems serves as part of the research and instruction team. S/he will mentor two Social Justice projects in the Legal Skills in Social Context program each year and provide the related training and reference to support the projects as well as the Legal Research and Writing foundational sessions. S/he will also teach two class sessions in the Advanced Legal Research class in the Winter rotation and two sessions in the Spring rotation.

Qualifications

The Head of Collection and Library Systems would have an M.L.S., or equivalent, from an ALA accredited program. JD preferred, but demonstrated knowledge of law and legal materials may be substituted.

The Head of Collection and Library Systems would have 6-10 years experience in library Technical Services and/or Library Systems, preferably in academic law libraries, a demonstrated knowledge of library serials and acquisitions and of LC cataloging practice and OCLC; a knowledge of III/Millennium or other similar automated system, and supervisory experience in a Collection and Library Systems setting.

Other projects as assigned. Strong service orientation, interpersonal and organizational skills; excellent oral and written communication skills are essential. Some evening and weekend work may be required.
