PC migration tool ... XP to 7?

We're looking at a PC migration tool for moving from XP to Win7.

Anyone have a favorite? We are just starting a move to 7 for our
faculty and staff.

I have looked at but really not tested: MS Files & Settings xfer wizard
, Laplink's PC Mover (http://www.laplink.com/pcmover/) and Zinstall
(http://www.zinstall.com/).

We're leery about an automated migration (even partially) from XP to 7
without some strong affirmative testimonials.

Any takers?

Thanks,

Phil

I'll second Jonathon on Windows Easy Transfer, it is great and I've used it
and the older files and settings transfer wizard many times over the years
without any trouble. I would recommend reviewing the settings to make sure it
is saving just what you want.

I like to use a handy utility called Belarc Advisor,
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html, before doing any upgrades or system
changes. It provides a nifty printable report about your PC that includes all
of its configuration info and things like software versions, license keys,
and serials numbers. Makes getting everything up and running on the new PC
easier.

Good luck!

RE: PC migration tool ... XP to 7?

Phil,

Windows Easy Transfer is awesome. Ships with Vista and 7 or It's an easy download for XP -- of course the price is right.

It basically saves the user's data, settings, etc. into one large file. Since you don't see or need access to the individual files, we are able to allow our student assistants to migrate faculty/staff machines. It's that easy.

You can connect both PCs to the network, connect them with a special "Windows Easy Transfer cable" (USB to USB) or save the data to the network from the old machine and then to the new machine. We have Windows Easy Transfer save the file back to the local hard drive in the old machine. Then we add the old drive to the new machine as a second drive and let the computer process the easy transfer file from there. The hard-drive to hard-drive transfer is extremely fast (much faster than USB or network) which is great for users with large profiles.

Let me know if you have any questions.
