USB keys and other stuff
I'm wondering how many of you are responsible for computer supplies for
faculty. If they want CDs, does your department purchase them? And what
about USB keys? Do you give them to faculty? If so, do you have any
controls in place for preventing someone from requesting multiple USB
keys in a short period of time?
Traditionally, the copy center purchased all supplies...floppies (back
in the day), CDs, etc. But since the IT dept is frequently involved with
burning CDs for faculty, I generally purchase them in bulk and supply
them. More and more faculty are requesting that we give them USB keys
and up to this point, I've purchased them on a one-on-one basis. They
want the large-capacity drives and I just don't have much extra money
this year to simply hand them out to everyone.
Also, with all the press about information walking out the door on USB
keys, I worry about our clinic data. I know that students have always
been able to copy data to their laptops or to a floppy and walk out with
it but somehow, the availability of USB keys makes that scenario seem
more real. Does anyone have a written security policy just for your
clinical law program?
