Windows 7

I hope I didn't miss a discussion on this already, but how many of you
are planning to upgrade to Windows 7 soon? Our office is an XP shop -
we managed to skip Vista altogether - and we have an opportunity to get
Win 7 Pro or Enterprise (Ultimate) from Tech Soup for next to nothing.
I figure we need to make the transition before MC stops supporting XP,
and I've been reading good things about 7.

Would we be dumb not to wait until the second or third service pack?

Tracey

institutions (including K-12 schools, colleges, universities, and trade
schools), political organizations, religious organizations, healthcare
networks and healthcare research organizations, or private foundations.
Please consult our list of ineligible organizations for more
information."

We're none of the above. (I'm one of the few members of Teknoids who is
not affiliated with a law school.)

RE: Windows 7

I have been running the Win7 x64 Beta and RC on my main laptop since February, and with the exception of some 64-bit printer drivers, I haven't had any trouble. There were a few issues with Adobe Acrobat at the beginning, but Acrobat cleared those up. My only issue currently is that if use Remote Desktop Connection to get back to my PC, I get a Dell Connectpoint software error when I get back to my computer. It doesn't affect the operation, but that little app doesn't work unless I restart it. I have not checked to see if there is a new version, but this too, should be fixed.

It seems the hardware manufacturers were better prepared this time, and since Win7 is just an upgrade of Vista, Vista Drivers will usually work for hardware if there isn't a Win7 driver yet.

As info, we do not carry software assurance on Windows, and therefore, the OS is "upgraded" when the PC is replaced on its normal 3-year cycle, so I currently have a mixed environment of XP and Vista. I will be glad when the XP machines are gone.

Windows 7

We also skipped Vista and are now running tests with 7 Enterprise. We will probably start moving our faculty over to 7 this spring and add an image for the library public machines over Christmas. I am also somewhat hesitant to jump in before the first service pack but so far our test machines have run well.

Windows 7

Windows 7, from a Unix guy prospective, is head and shoulders better
than Vista. If you're looking at 64-bit support, then it too is a
worthwhile upgrade. Time marches forward, and as good as XP was,
Windows 7 is at least not a step backward.

Make sure your software works with it though, lots of weird little
issues we're having with certain software...
