Diagraming and Outlining Tools

There are any number of opensource (that means free, as in beer) outlining and diagraming tools that may be of interest/use to law faculty. Here are my favorites.

  • Freemind is a mind mapping tool written in Java. It runs on any platform. It is useful for diagraming and annotating ideas.
  • JOE, Java Outline Editor, is a basic outliner. A little old, but still quite effective for outlining anything.
  • OPML Editor is a more sophisticated outlining and editing tool. It is available for Windows and Mac and has a number of cool features including the ability to post directly to a website.
  • Dia is a full-fledged diagraming program that can be used to create very sophisticated flow charts and diagrams. It is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
