Cindy, you're a lady after my own heart! I have a rescued thirteen
year-old Siamese who is best buddies with my Golden Retriever. As for
cats generally, sure they are independent, that is why it is so
gratifying when you have earned their love and trust. One more thing: I
once knew a lovely young lady who was, shall we say, not the brightest
bulb on the Christmas tree. She stated to me that she really didn't like
cats very much because they "Looked at her as though they were smarter
than she was". Guess what? They were.

I'm a foster mom for our local Animal Humane and currently have two cat
families...a momma with four babies and two orphan kittens, about 3
weeks old, in addition to my persona menagerie (three cats and a Boxer
who thinks he's a mom cat to the orphan kittens I often foster).
Today I have the two orphans in my office as they are too small to go
all day without eating. They were sleeping peacefully in their bed on
the floor until the white cat from hell in this video came on. They've
imprinted on me as their mom and protector but racing up my leg to get
into my lap was counterproductive since they just got closer to the
speakers...

Don't get me wrong, I love cats (is my wife reading this?), I just think
that sometimes they can be a little too, er, independent-minded.
I've never had a cat defend me from a burglar ... come to think of it,
never had a dog do that either.
