Is anyone Using Gmail for Student Email?

Submitted by mperna on Mon, 05/12/2008 - 8:10am.

Does anyone use Gmail’s educational offer for free
email and Google apps to students?

If so:

  1. What type of email system did
you run prior? And are you still running it for staff and faculty?
  2. How long have you had Gmail
incorporated into your Email production environment?
  3. Do you find support helpful?
  4. How was the migration to Gmail?
  5. What has been the
    student’s reaction to Gmail?

If anyone has any horror stories or fantastic experiences
that would be great to hear about as well.

Thank you in advance for all your answers and help,

Hello Matthew,

I can sum it up in one sentence: “We
love Google Apps for Education!’.

We were an early adopter; we moved all of
our students onto google apps this past Fall.  We were the test bed and
did the initial rollout, mid way through this Spring semester the entire
University followed suit and now all students are on google apps.

  1. Prior
to google apps our students used iplanet which was provided by the
University.  We maintain an exchange 2003 environment internally for
    staff and faculty.
  2. This
will be the first year that we rolled it out, but we have now gone through
a full fall and spring semester without a hitch.
  3. Yes,
support is extremely helpful, we used them a lot to set things up for the
initial rollout.  However, once we went live things have gone so
smoothly that we have not needed them since.
  4. Migration
was a piece of cake.  You have to spend time planning things out but
google is extremely helpful and things just work.  It was the most
seamless migration that I have ever been involved with and I have been in
    IT for over 20 years.
  5. Our
students love Google Apps for Education, what is not to love.  Over
6.5GB of storage, a user friendly interface, a complete suite of
collaborative tools (which they did not have before), an email address
that they will keep for life, and no rolling 6 month retention policy like
we had with iplanet.  I was a bit worried about the fact that there
were no folders (tags instead) and the arrangement with conversations but
the students just picked it up.  We trained our help desk and
everyone was ready but the Google call volume was non existent.

We will be presenting our implementation
of Google Apps for Education, Itunes University and YouTube at CALI, see you there.

Ray
