Is anyone Using Gmail for Student Email?

Submitted by mperna on Mon, 05/12/2008 - 8:10am.

Does anyone use Gmail’s educational offer for free
email and Google apps to students?

If so:

  1. What type of email system did
you run prior? And are you still running it for staff and faculty?
  2. How long have you had Gmail
incorporated into your Email production environment?
  3. Do you find support helpful?
  4. How was the migration to Gmail?
  5. What has been the
    student’s reaction to Gmail?

If anyone has any horror stories or fantastic experiences
that would be great to hear about as well.

Thank you in advance for all your answers and help,

Before I left UNLV we had been using Google Apps for a couple of years for student email. Prior to the migration the students were on a web/pop mail system that the university system ran. To say the least it was a pretty old interface and had the nasty habit of dropping email using algorithms that were known to the system administrators but not the students trying to use the system.

So in short the students seem to really like it. The transition/migration was trivial and to be honest I couldn't tell you much about support since we never had to use it for email. We have used it in combination with the groups for some calendar API issues and found the folks at Google to be very responsive and helpful.
