My Favorite Feature in Word 2007

Submitted by elmer on Thu, 05/24/2007 - 12:40pm.

You can write blog posts or, more specifically you can use Word07 as an editor for any website that uses one of the blog XMLRPC interfaces to accept articles. This includes Drupal and Classcaster and more. This post was written using Word 2007 connecting to www.teknoids.net. Pretty cool.

On Vista rollouts, upgrades, etc.

Submitted by elmer on Fri, 05/18/2007 - 8:23am.

Warning: this got a bit long:)

While I no longer have to worry about keeping a lab running, I thought I'd throw my two cents in anyway. I've been running Vista exclusively on my laptop since January (2007) and I must say I like it a lot more than XP.

The laptop I'm running it on is a year old Toshiba Satellite with a Centrino Duo 1.66 Ghz processor with a 1 gig of RAM and Intel Mobile graphics. It came with XP and was marked as 'Vista Capable'. As expected, XP performance was marginal and I was lucky to get through a day without needing to reboot (I was in the habit of shutting down the PC for lunch just to preserve my sanity). And, yes, I did run Linux on it with better results. Indeed about half the time I worked on the Linux desktop and that was fine.

When the Vista betas came out last summer I grabbed those, but was not impressed. I wasn't even able to get the release candidates to install properly. I was not optimistic about 'Vista Capable'. That is until I picked up a copy Vista Enterprise.

BaseCamp Outlook

Submitted by Venera on Wed, 03/28/2007 - 11:15pm.

Hello, my name is Venera
And I’m working for a software company. It’s the first project of that kind and it’s pretty hard for me.
We currently working on the development of commercial plugin sync BaseCamp with Outlook. www.grabsync.com
Of course the first question that I had was: “Do you need a sync between BaseCamp & Outlook?”. I would say yes.
I try to analyze what would you like to see (it was really not easy to me, but I tried! )
So I made a conclusion to sync milestones with outlook calendar, but not sure of it.
Maybe you need better sync To-Does? Or maybe both? That’s a good question… for me.
I think people who working with such a programs can propose what exactly you want to sync? What features you would like to see?

Feel free to post here. You also can Email me & I will answer you in shot time (that’s for sure).

Thank you.

Submitted by elmer on Sun, 12/31/2006 - 9:20pm.

A number of enterprise customers have already signed up for 16,000 of the 70,000 annual SUSE Linux enterprise subscription certificates Microsoft is offering under its recent, controversial deal with Novell. Heading the list of customers taking advantage of those certificates are Deutsche Bank AG, Credit Suisse and AIG Technologies, all of whom have welcomed the interoperability moves between Microsoft and Novell.

Get a VPC Machine to Run XP SP2, IE6, IE7

Submitted by elmer on Sat, 12/02/2006 - 9:39am.

Many of you have asked how to run IE6 and IE7 in a side by side environment. As Chris Wilson blogged about early this year, it’s unfortunately not so easy to do. There are workarounds, but they are unsupported and don’t necessarily work the same way as IE6 or IE7 would work when installed properly. As Chris said, the best way to use multiple versions of IE on one machine is via virtualization. Microsoft has recently made Virtual PC 2004 a free download; we’ve taken advantage of that by releasing a VPC virtual machine image containing a pre-activated Windows XP SP2, IE6 and the IE7 Readiness Toolkit to help facilitate your testing and development. The image is time bombed and will no longer function after April 1, 2007. We hope to continue to provide these images in the future as a service to web developers.

Document management systems seemed to be on many peoples' minds at the CALI conference. Rich McCue mentioned his very successful use of Sharepoint services and also clued me into Alfresco. Both look very interesting.

MSFT Betas Abound

Submitted by elmer on Tue, 05/23/2006 - 4:44pm.

The software giant on May 23 delivered Beta 2 versions of its Windows Vista operating system, Office System 2007 and Windows Server Longhorn at the same time. The scheduled 2007 arrival of the three products, now in beta, means that 2007 is shaping up to be one of the most important periods in some years for Microsoft, and by extension, the PC industry. But by delivering all three betas simultaneously, Microsoft is also setting out to prove that the trio is also more tightly coupled than before when it comes to security and productivity features, including search and document sharing.

Friday Fun: R U Ready 4 Vista?

Submitted by elmer on Thu, 05/18/2006 - 9:24pm.

The Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor is a small beta application that you can run on your current Windows XP-based computer to find out if it's ready for an upgrade to Windows Vista. When you run the Upgrade Advisor, it will scan your computer and generate an easy-to-understand report of any known system and device compatibility issues, along with recommendations on how you can get your PC ready for Windows Vista.

Download it here.  Just the thing for a slow Friday afternoon.  How long before everyone is clamoring for Vista ready machines?
