Examsoft and SQL

Hi all,

I'm having a problem setting up examsoft on out registrar's computer. The softteach software is getting some sort of 1433 port error and is not connecting to examsoft's database. Now, i know our university allows outbound 1433 access but blocks inbound access as that is the default SQL port. Is there any way around this without me talking to our main campus network security personnel? Has anyone seen this problem before?

~Joe

Exam Software Seating

Another exam software question. Are schools that offer exam software such as Examsoft or Securexam making any special seating arrangements to separate the laptop users from the writers? Other than noise, are there any concerns with combining these groups?

Thanks.
Exam Soft on Intel Mac

We recently had a student setup his Intel Mac to dual boot with OSX and Windoze XP SP2 (Why Windoze on a Mac I'll never understand). After installing XP he installed Examsoft and had no problems running the qualifying exam.

Does anyone see the downside of letting students do this? We don't have an Intel Mac to test this on so I am going strictly by what the student claims. I did see it working briefly so I see no reason to doubt that this will work.

Opinions, criticisms, claims of downright lies welcome.
exam software saving & printing procedures

For those of you whose law school
enrollment is 1,000 or more students, I would like to request your
input on the following:

When students are done with taking an exam, how to they save/upload?
How do exams get printed?

At our school we don't have any classrooms with Ethernet to the seat.
We instituted wireless networking about two years ago. For most
purposes it has sufficed, but toward the end of every semester, it
seems the system can't quite keep up with demand. I'm a bit
apprehensive to rely on it for uploading completed exams. Up to now our
exams have been saved to USB drives we distribute to each student in
their exam room. These drives are returned with the exam. Our
Registrar's office then copies the exam files to a network folder,
prints them, removes the file from the USB drive and then puts the
drive back into circulation.

Final Exam Results

Our school completed the final pilot exams using Exam4
from Extegrity and everything worked great for about
150 students (one exam each submitted on USB drive).

We still have some fine tuning to do on our
instructions and exam file processing, but the
software was flawless. This fall we will roll out the
Exam4 software and phase in about 1/3 of our 900
students and then another 1/3 next fall, etc. and will
also move towards electronic submittal at the same
time.

I am very interested in hearing from everyone about
your exam software and results as we close out finals.

Happy Finals!

RE: Computer Exams - Proctors

Dan,
The IT staff has provided proctors...kind-of...since we started exams on
computers. We don't have anyone in the room and never have (the faculty
voted against it). However, once we started with Securexam, I felt that
the IT people needed to be available during the exam...it's a peace of
mind thing as much as anything. We sit in the forum (the area outside
the main exam rooms) and help before, during, and after, if needed. I
don't feel as though my student employees would be viewed with providing
the same reassurance as the IT staff although I was tempted this year as
I'm down one staff person.
We collect cell phones prior to the exam. I had not, however, considered
the use of a scanning device. I believe the honor code must be relied on
as if a student really wants to cheat, s/he will find a way to do so.
**CORRECTION ON EARLIER EXAM SOFTWARE POST**

******************CORRECTION************************

The software I was talking about was EXAM4, by Extegrity, NOT ExamSoft.
The error was just (within the last 60 sec) brought to my attention by
the good folks at ExamSoft, who were VERY gracious in accepting my
repeated (and embarrassed) apologies for inadvertently maligning their
product.

Everything I detailed in my attempt to help did occur, but with Exam4,
which pretty much makes my commentary irrelevant.

I am truly sorry for the mix-up in names, and for any
inconvenience/hardship this has caused.

question for mailing list

I was wondering how other Law Schools or even other undergraduate
universities handle online testing, specifically the rules and
procedures students have to follow to setup their computer for online
testing AND any other rules or procedures for timeframes to arrive to
these testing and how your school enforces these rules.

Any info or experience you can give me will be appreciated.
