invoice/receipt scanning

Submitted by ken on Thu, 07/03/2008 - 12:27pm.

Apparently neither our ILS nor the legal publishing industry have bought into EDI, so I am looking to convert our library's technical services operation from making and filing paper copies of their receipts to scanning them and storing the digital copies.  I'm wondering whether any of you are doing this, and if so, which applications are you using? I am familiar with NeatReceipts, which I use at home, but it seems a little cumbersome for a higher volume need.  Suggestions?

Did you break the law today ??

Submitted by sclausnitzer on Wed, 07/02/2008 - 9:03am.

According to this article ( http://www.ij.org/first_amendment/tx_computer_repair/6_26_08pr.html ) any IT Pro who "repairs" a PC in Texas without a Private Investigators license will be doing just that.

This leads to other serious questions for our Texas brethren:
- Will this apply to in-house repairs?
- Will your school pay for such licensing?
- Will you throw away every computer at it's first BSOD for the next three years?
- Will this allow PC techies to carry guns?

With penalties up to $4,000, 1 year in jail, and civil liability up to $10,000 for both the tech and the customer, it looks like Texas may soon be forced into "outsourcing" computer repairs.

Wolfvision VZ-8light doc camera

Submitted by almaraz on Thu, 06/26/2008 - 5:35pm.

Does anyone have any experience with the Wolfvision VZ-8light portable
document camera? Our vendor is recommending this unit.

I did a search and didn't find any references to it in the archives but
did find that several schools have these units in their classrooms.

Would you recommend it? Is there another unit you would recommend instead?

Thanks!

Document management beyond the clinic?

Submitted by michael.sparks on Tue, 06/24/2008 - 10:10pm.

Teknoids one and all,

Fresh back from a great CALI conference, I've been asked to find out what
other law schools do for document management and security generally and for
the administration, not especially what is done for the clinical programs.

The case management software session headed up by Andy Adkins was very
informative and I expect to be in that market very soon here, but the
discussion did not go beyond application to clinics (and I didn't yet know I
should be asking). So, what are folks doing for your schools'
administrations? Formal document/case management systems? Traditional file
shares with NTFS permissions? Simple web/SFTP/FTPS access? Any special
security measures beyond laptop file encryption, like automated/mandatory
file encryption/ACL's or other measures to make sure documents do move
beyond defined boundaries?

Any and all responses appreciated!

Michael

Use of streamed video with MediaNotes?

Submitted by will.monroe on Mon, 06/23/2008 - 6:00pm.

Fellow Teknoids,

During Gene Koo's session on MediaNotes, "The Nuts and Bolts of Using
MediaNotes to Teach Skills", someone tried using Quicktime reference
movies as a substitute for actual locally-saved media files and,
apparently, had success. If you are that person would you be willing
to share the details of how you accomplished that on the wiki or over
the listserv? This would be a very convenient solution to the problem
of transferring video files.

Thanks,

Will

Interested in More Mac Support?

Submitted by Dennis Bishop on Mon, 06/23/2008 - 2:16pm.

Hi All,

After attending a couple of Mac-centric sessions at this year's CALI,
I came away with the perception that those of us who actively support
Macs need to get Apple involved with helping us provide services for
our students.

At UO Law we provide equivalent support to both students (and faculty)
who use Dells and Macs including onsite repair, a loaner pool, etc.
I'm happy to share as much info as possible with others about how we
do this so please contact me via the teknoids list or individually if
you would like to learn more.

Best regards,

Dennis

ScanSnap in the classroom?

Submitted by Joseph Bazan on Wed, 06/18/2008 - 4:45pm.

To all of you ScanSnap worshipers:  I am trying to incorporate using a document scanner like ScanSnap into my curriculum as the lawyers in Minnesota, and I presume your areas, are buying ScanSnaps as fast as they can be manufactured to eliminate paper at the law office.  I’d like to get this little machine into my school’s Law Office Technology course. Is there any other software besides Acrobat that will work automatically with ScanSnap Manager?  Anyone use CutePDF Pro with the ScanSnap manager?  Because more of us are using this in our offices, I have some preliminary approval to make my school shell out some bucks to make my classroom a laboratory to see if the ScanSnap should be included as a formal objective in our Law Office Technology course.  I can make those classes work even if the machine is hooked up to only one computer and has only one license for the software, but I'd like to see if I can expand it, legally, without having to purchase a boatload of licenses and machines.  Any thoughts about using this in a paralegal classroom would be most helpful. And thank you!
