RE: Symplicity Problems

I was talking with our Dean of Career Services and he noted to me that this is a frequent topic on the Symplicity listserv he is on. Apparently what we see is that it is slow midday when the west coast schools/law students start getting on the system.
Avatar Creation?

.EmailQuote { margin-left: 1pt; padding-left: 4pt; border-left: #800000 2px solid; }

Does anyone know of a website that you can create an Avatar without having to go through a process of registering for that website?

I want to create a local survey where the participants create their own avatars as part of the survey. So far, I've found some sites where you can create an avatar, but you have to register with the site in order to create it. I'm afraid
that if they have to register, then they won't want to participate in the survey.

Is there a site that just allows you to create and save, without having to register??
FW: New email virus warning

I just sent this on and thought I'd share it here, too. We've already
seen the CNN emails and have had unsuspecting users click the "stories".
The Facebook variant is actually a clever bit of social engineering,
IMO. I'd probably read a story about the FBI and Facebook...
Cyndi

Just in time for the Olympics, there is a new security threat making
it's rounds. Here's what another State sysadmin had to say:

>>>
Beginning on August 5, 2008 reports of mass emails claiming to be from
the CNN.com news Web site began to surface. Currently the subject of the
email is "CNN.com Daily Top 10". These emails are not from CNN, and
contain web links to malicious sites that will attempt to install
malware purporting to be an Adobe Flash Player upgrade. The MS-ISAC has
received reports from multiple states including Michigan, New York,
North Carolina and Wisconsin, indicating their users have received these
emails.

As the 2008 Olympics will be starting Friday, August 8, we anticipate

Using large USB drives to replace backup tapes?

Hi,

2TB USB/firewire drives are now $450. Is anyone seriously using these
for data and systems backups? I am looking for a way to leapfrog from
LTO2 tapes (200G) to a disk-based system. We have not found tapes to
be reliable during our disaster recovery drills.

We tried internet-based backups but it's too slow.

The 2TB drives are RAID-0, so speed should be good. Disk fault tolerance
can be achieved by doing the backups frequently enough.

We can use two tape vaulting providers, in case one gets attacked by
Magneto.

There would be more flexibility in how we can dump the data to disk.
Robocopy can take a drive with a month-old full backup and update only
the files that have changed. So you get the advantages of a full
backup (the data is independent from other drives) but the speed of a
differential.

One obstacle is encryption. I haven't seen RAID-0 drives that use
hardware encryption, and I'm not if TrueCrypt whole-disk encryption
would work.

Any other obstacles or ideas I should consider?

Network authentication for user accountability?

Network authentication for user accountability?

Sanity check before surrendering to Big Brother...

I'm wondering what other schools are experiencing in the way of university
network security policy, particularly in regard to having each campus user
register their computer's MAC address (through a web page) for easy access
when the RIAA or police come calling.

We've required network authentication on the wireless from the beginning,
but it is new here on the wire. In the past it has been sufficient to link a
specific IP address to a specific MAC address at a particular time (by DHCP
log) and very simply find the problem computer. But you can't take a

Alfresco first open source ECM out the door with Sharepoint protocol support?

.

Earlier this year, Microsoft was pressured by the European
Commission's DG Competition into releasing, inter alia, the
communications protocols for Sharepoint/Office interactions. To my
knowledge, Alfresco is the first open source ECM to support those
protocols, allowing Alfresco integration with Office and/or Sharepoint
Server.
