MSFT Passes Out 16,000 SUSE Subs

A number of enterprise customers have already signed up for 16,000 of the 70,000 annual SUSE Linux enterprise subscription certificates Microsoft is offering under its recent, controversial deal with Novell. Heading the list of customers taking advantage of those certificates are Deutsche Bank AG, Credit Suisse and AIG Technologies, all of whom have welcomed the interoperability moves between Microsoft and Novell.

Novell opened the LinuxWorld Conference here with the introduction April 3 of the beta program for Mono 1.2, its open-source implementation of the Microsoft .Net Framework designed to help corporate IT and ISV developers migrate existing .NET applications to Linux and build new Linux and cross-platform applications.Novell also announced it is developing a new Linux build service framework and disclosed details about the availability of SUSE Linux 10.1, the newest version of its community Linux distribution.ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT

Novell To Support Netware To 2015 and Beyond

Novell executives used the company's annual BrainShare conference here to pledge to continue to support NetWare 6.5 until at least 2015 for those customers who had no plans to upgrade to Linux."We will support NetWare 6.5 for as long as customers continue to use it. So I urge those of you who have not yet upgraded to NetWare 6.5 to do so. But we want to make clear that our commitment to the product remains unchanged and in force," Jack Messman, Novell CEO and chairman, said in his opening keynote at the conference on March 20.

Dell Adds ZENWorks to Linux Servers

Dell Inc. today said it will begin offering a version of Novell Inc.’s ZENworks 7 software customized for managing Dell’s PowerEdge servers running Linux.The ZENworks 7 Linux Management -– Dell Edition is expected to be available April 19 and can manage servers running either Red Hat Enterprise Linux or Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, according to Judy Chavis, director of business development for enterprise software alliances at Dell.

HP Simplifies SUSE Licensing

Hewlett-Packard Co. and Novell Inc. have teamed up to offer a bundling license that they say makes it easier and cheaper to run SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) on HP servers.The Enterprise Linux 8-License Value Pack provides a subscription of Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 for up to eight HP ProLiant and BladeSystem servers. The bundle also includes Novell’s AppArmor security application.
