student laptops on network

I'm wondering how y'all enforce students running current antivirus software
when they're on your network.
This last virus showed us how critical it is for all students on our wire to
keep their laptops clean. Sure, we keep current data files on everything
within the law school, but what do I tell the student who insists he doesn't
want/need to keep his own laptop updated? I had one guy tell me it's easy
for him to simply reload the whole laptop, including the OS, so why should
he care. Easy enough for me to say he can't be on our wire, but how do I
identify others like him who are not running antivirus software?
